Hydrodynamic and hydro-acoustic testing at CNR have been successfully completed!!!

A comprehensive experimental campaign has been successfully conducted in the large cavitation tunnel of the Institute of Marine Engineering at CNR. The campaign included detailed flow measurements using Stereoscopic PIV, force measurements, as well as cavitation and acoustic analyses. The activities were coordinated by Dr. Mario Felli and his team.

Ship model equipped with a fully tubercled ducted propeller operating in the Large Cavitation Channel at CNR

The test matrix covered four different configurations of a reference ducted propeller, with and without leading-edge tubercles applied to both the propeller blades and the duct. Tests were carried out under straight-ahead conditions and steady drift to evaluate the effectiveness of the tubercles under both design and off-design conditions.

A video of the model operating in the test section is shown above, with some representative results presented below.

Vorticity fields under straight-ahead conditions for four configurations. NP–ND: no tubercles on propeller and duct, NP–TD: tubercled duct, non-tubercled propeller, TP–ND: tubercled propeller, non-tubercled duct, TP–TD: tubercles on both propeller and duct
Vorticity fields understudy drift conditions for four configurations. NP–ND: no tubercles on propeller and duct, NP–TD: tubercled duct, non-tubercled propeller, TP–ND: tubercled propeller, non-tubercled duct, TP–TD: tubercles on both propeller and duct
